Sayonara....but no rest for the wicked

Aww - they were starting to jack down on the weekend...i wonder if they have gone now.....
[edit] (yup yup - they jacked down and towed away....ooh i found this news video too.)

In other Titan news (omgawd - come to rebeccas blog for the latest on what Titan is doing - NOT!) they have started removing the bunker fuel from that capsized ship in the Philippines, AND they helped out with rescuing the crew of ship that ran aground on the weekend in Gibraltor - they were already there working nearby on another ship - the New Flame (thats a job thats been going on for a while too).

The end

This story makes me happy and kinda sad at the same time!
I am so pleased for all the folks at Titan who worked on this and got the job done by their deadline. So fantastic.
It makes me laugh to think of all the sceptical stories around the time Titan were preparing to take the two Karlissa barges out to the New Carissa site.
Ha ha morons - you were proved SO wrong!

But whats lil Rebecca gonna obsess about now? I have been telling people I think I am gonna give myself an ulcer in the next month worrying about me going overseas. So yeah - I am sad my main distraction from my life is no longer available. WAH!

Titan - kicking arse and taking names! :D

Noooow that Titan are almost done there are a bunch of stories about the New Carissa! Typical! Get with the program media people - its been fascinating the whole way along!

Anyways the more interesting stuff:

KATU.com has a series of pics showing the progression of the removal.
KEZI 9 News has some new videos - New Carissa: A Decade at Sea about the history of what happened before Titan got there, AND a video about the last big chunk.
KCBY.com with that Tim Novotny dude (have watched TOO many vids with him the last few months....) has a good video where Salvage Master Shelby Harris talks about what still needs to be done.

Is it me or does Shelby seem a bit uncomfortable with this 'dealing with the media' part of his job? :D (well maybe it was just the sun in his eyes...i dunno)

Okay really - I will stop with this silliness soon, I promise. Once I enter 'i am going to canada'-mode properly i am sure the salvage related posts will slow again.

Sweeeeeeeeet

Instead of excessive blogging I decided to have a lil nap last night - ended up sleeping a good 5 hours longer than i wanted to...nice. We also had a power outage so I woke up and no music coming from the computer! So not right!
You know thats probably what eventually woke me up...my brain going 'hey dude - something isnt normal - wake up and investigate!! heh.

ANYWAYS - all is forgiven. The World Link has another new blog story but more importantly the champions have a new photo slide show! Some cool piccies!

Thats just a small bit of metal man.... ;D
But yeah - just think about how big the the New Carissa used to be next to those barges.....fracking awesome!

A new news clip about how well the New Carissa project is going.

And I found this slideshow from a few months back when Titan frst brought the barges to Coos Bay. Has audio talking about what they are doing now and pics of the barge legs waiting to be put together.
Yes - only I care about this but I am blogging it anyways! :p

I SHOULD be asleep but I have been sick since Thursday night and I let work early and when I got home I had a nap in the afternoon, so after that I wasnt tired for ages , but now queasiness is keeping me awake. Am supposed to be going to my friends place later in the morning but not sure if I am well enough. >.<

New New Carissa salvage pics at the World Link. Colour me HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More of the same...

It doesnt stop.
Seriously...I should be in bed - I want to get to work an hour earlier tomorrow and dude - I am SO not waking up on time. BUT the salvage geekery continues. Have salvage dudes had fangirls before??? I apologise to you all!

Anyways so there is this nifty page run by the Oregon state govt about the New Carissa project. Has lots of info, some different photos to the ones I have already seen, plus that Youtube video I linked the other day.

I also found this article from March with a great pic showing the barges arriving in Coos Bay.

Anyways, a few weeks ago I got my mum to read the Wired article that started all this and so I can ramble to her about it and the darling acts interested - go mum!
And I was telling my friend Maddison on Saturday night and she is my fellow sci fi/fantasy book reading co-hort and she pulled this book out of her bag by a guy named Clive Cussler and said if I want some fiction related to this weird maritime obsession then read some of this guys stuff. Sadly money hording Rebecca may have to hit the library to get some books. Too poor to buy atm.

I have to say I am sad that if you do a search for New Carissa on google you have to get to page 14 before my blog shows up, and page 8 if you search for Titan Salvage... T.T
But then no one reads this thing do they? :D

Oh hey - I walked across the Harbour Bridge and over to Wynyard station tonight (well last night now) and the only dramas was my usual Achilles tendon pain! Shocking! Usually I get weird semi-numbness from my feet to my knees followed by other charming pains. SO yeah - was pretty pleased. And even teh Achilles tendon pain would sometimes disappear if I rolled my foot a certain way. AWESOME!
If it will just stay rain-free a bit more in the evenings I will try and do it more often. I definately prefer walking the bridge in winter - there is no sun or evil heat torturing me.

In other news - channel seven are reairing that stupid Playing It Straight show - i swear that Campbell guy went to my high school for a while.

Okay - its now 1:35am - I am going to sleep.

OH MY GAH!

Brand me a fangirl because this article made me soooo excited!
There is gonna be a National Geographic series called Salvage Code Red about the salvage industry including stuff about the New Carissa!! WOO!

In other exciting stuff (thanks Google News!) the cable car has been installed and is being tested at the New Carissa worksite.

Why am I so excited about this????????????????

Anyways there are lil news clip videos for both the above links.

WOO!

Man - too much time spent looking for stuff! I gotta find something else to do! I blame the fact that I am trying to save money so I can waste money on other hobbies!

But look what I found - the start of the vid just shows shots of the New Carissa but later on it shows Titan peeps preparing to set one of the legs on one of the jack-up barges!!! AWESOME! I love teh interweb!

Oh what a surprise!

Confession time. You KNOW when I say its not an obsession it usually is. :D
Because i got sick of doing the search on Google News for updates on the New Carissa I decided to get Google Alerts to let me know when there was a new story mentioning Titan Salvage.
Because of this it showed me an ad for SVITZERs (another maritime company) Salvage Academy. I went and had a look.....you know... 'cause I'm not obsessed. :D
I also had a look around SVITZERs site. On their links page was International Salvage Union. Their overview page has some good info about the salvage industry overall if anyone else but me is interested. :D

Anyways on my news scavenger hunt a few days back I found this article from 2000 about another salvage job by Titan in '96 that was really fricking dangerous.
Its about a ship called the Igloo Moon that ran aground near Biscayne National Park in Florida with a very dangerous and explosive chemical on board. The salvage operation which was aleady dangerous was made even worse because two different storm systems combined to create huge wind and waves that put the ship and everyone working on it in even more danger. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!

ANYWAYS. If anyone else is interested in keeping an eye on the New Carissa salvage job The World Link, which is a newspaper for Coos Bay, Oregon, is probably the best for consistent coverage. I usually check them every day or so. They now have a gallery of all their recent photos which I was excited about because I wanted to see some decent shots of Titans jack-up barges. I had read about them and I had seen some pics but most of the time its hard to get a sense of scale because the things they are near are also pretty huge - but these pics let you see just how big they are!
I am hanging out for when they move the Karlissa B (the second barge for those not in the know) out there as well.
Damn I wish I lived in Oregon so I could be a tool and rock down to the beach and watch the guys work for a day. Haha....I am such a loser.

I am maintaining a small modicum of sensibleness. I have random questions about stuff that I wanna pester SOMEONE to get the answers so I can forget about it......like when they use the Titan pullers - how do they attach the chains to the thing they are pulling??
I COULD be a totally annoying FREAK and pester one of the email contacts on Titans site but that would be dodgy! So see - I AM being retrained. Please congratulate me on this. You dont KNOW the willpower required to NOT act.

Remember kids - 90% of Rebeccas obsessions are short term. I should be over this one soon. Till then you are probably gonna be stuck with more posts about this.
